Harsh Discipline and Contradiction

October 2020

Be Free program presented two episodes on Bahrain Women Association’s Instagram live about two types of emotional abuse, the episodes were presented by Mrs. Esmat Hammad and Mrs. Dekrayat Sanad, trainers at Be-Free program.

“Contradiction” was the title of the first episode, that explained parents’ lack of consistency in expressing their opinion or reaction to their child in similar situations. It gives children mixed messages, that confuses them. This attitude makes children feel insecure, and will not encourage them to seek parents' help in difficult situations, fearing their reactions. Real-life examples of “contradiction”, its causes and how to deal with it were discussed.

The second episode, discussed “Harsh Discipline”, its various forms and parents’ motives behind being harsh, as there is no doubt that the majority of parents love and wish the best for their children. Nevertheless, the pressure of daily life, the absence of some basic information about the development of the child’s mindset and the effective methods of dealing with them lead to harsh disciplining methods. Consequently, it leaves parents feeling guilty, and stressed.
The episode provided some helpful information about the child’s mindset, explained the difference between firm discipline and harsh discipline, along with some practical and effective methods when dealing with children and teenagers.
Both episodes concluded with suggestions for alternatives in disciplining children to limit emotional abuse and nurture a culture of love and peace in the family.
